Yana Yaroshevska and Olga Sopilnyak, attorneys at law at Doubinsky & Osharova, co-authored the article “AI and Data Protection in Ukraine: Moving Toward EU Standards", published in the 10th edition of The Legal Industry Reviews Ukraine.
In their publication, the authors explore how the rapid development of artificial intelligence is already reshaping Ukraine’s regulatory landscape and setting new rules of the game for businesses. The key focus is striking the right balance between innovation and compliance, particularly in personal data protection.
The article provides a comprehensive overview of Ukraine’s movement towards the European regulatory framework (including the GDPR and the EU AI Act). It highlights key transformations that businesses should already be taking into account, including:
- gradual implementation of EU standards through the White Paper and Roadmap, including the development of a national AI law;
- accession to international initiatives, including the signing of the Council of Europe Framework Convention on AI;
- shaping public policy through the draft AI Development Strategy;
- introduction of modern approaches to data regulation, including the concept of profiling.
